Team SPED seizes 28 gold medals


From being overall champion in Special Games last year in Vigan City with 18 gold medals, San Carlos City Division Team Special Education (SPED) seized 28 gold medals in the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet 2018 held at Alaminos City, February 11-15.

Dominating the Athletics (run, jump and throw) and Aquatics events, SCC athletes clinched 23 and 5 gold medals, respectively.

Anthony Peralta of Bacnar NHS led the charge, taking home four (4) gold medals in 100m, 200m, 400m run and 4x100m relay; Freddie Buenaventura of CP Gutierrez ES with three (3) in 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay; Shiela Mae Rosario of Pangalangan NHS with three (3) in 100m run, 4x100m relay and running long jump; Leonardo Ferrer of Talang CS with two (2) in 50m breastroke and backstroke; Mark John Paul Mondares of Pangalangan NHS with two (2) in shotput and 4x100m relay; Jonas Aquino of Tarectec ES with two (2) in 400m run and 4x100m relay; Jonalyn De Vera of Bacnar NHS with two (2) in shotput and 4x100m relay; and Herminigildo Posadas Jr. and Rico Yan Umayam of Pangalangan NHS with one gold in 50m breastroke and 50m backstroke, respectively.
Learners with hearing impairment (HI), intellectual disability (ID), visual impairment (VI) and orthopedically handicapped (OH) all over the region participated in the said events. Medals from the special games were added to the overall standing of the participating teams, marking a history in the R1AA Meet.

Dr. Minerva A. Muñoz, Education Program Supervisor for SPED, said that trust and respect are the team’s key to attain success.

Winning athletes will represent the region for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa 2018 which will be held in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur on April 16-20.
