In every competition, the aim of each contestant is to win. It is every competitor’s desire to hit the gold and bring home the bacon. It is the wish of everyone who joins a contest to outrank others and be declared as winner.
Schools Press Conferences (division, regional and national levels) are held annually with the objective of honing students’ talents and skills in the field of journalism. Yearly, campus journalists armed with their knowledge and pens meet and compete. Their writing prowess is exhibited through contest events such as News, Editorial, Feature, Science-Feature, Copy Reading and Headline Writing, and Sports writing. Their broadcasting skill is displayed through Radio and TV Broadcasting Competition. Talents in drawing and photography are enhanced through Editorial Cartooning and Photojournalism.
Every campus journalist in a competition has that ardent desire to win. But, what does it take to win and what’s in store in winning?
Winning entails investment. A person who wants to win must invest time, effort and a positive attitude. There must be no wasted time for a person who wishes to be triumphant. Every minute must be counted as relevant for review and practice. This doesn’t mean, however, that a contestant must spend all his time in reviewing or practicing. This means that one must grab each opportunity for practice and review. In here, one must have knowledge on proper time management.
It is believed that a reward awaits one who exerts extra effort. Sincerity in one’s desire to win is reflected on the effort exerted. A person who spends much effort in review and practice for a competition is more likely to win than one who has lesser preparation. Success is achieved when preparation gets to its hardest level.
Positive attitude also proves to be a strong factor contributory to winning. In the exertion of extra time and effort in review and practice, positive attitude always finds its place. Exuding an optimistic view in every endeavour will certainly lighten a burden leading to being victorious.
A prize is always in store for someone who wins a competition. Be it in the form of material reward like medal, cash or certificate or a verbal recognition or praise, a winner considers such as a treasure.
In schools press conferences, trophies, medals and certificates of recognition are the prizes given to winners. Aside from these, verbal praises and congratulatory remarks and gestures fill the air as names of winners are announced. Nothing can be compared to the overwhelming joy felt by a winner as he receives his prize as a token for the extra time and effort he exerted and the positive attitude he exuded during review and practice. Indeed, success comes to its sweetest version after experiencing hardships in preparation.
Added to the tokens of recognition, verbal and non-verbal rewards are the most fulfilling prize a winner receives, that is, a boost on self-esteem. An enhancement on self-confidence contributes to the growth of a person making him more ready to face challenges that life offers.
Though a person has to pay a price for a prize in competitions, it has to be realized that the prize is worth the price.
