What better way to beat the blistering summer heat than a dip in the cool blue waters of a swimming pool? However, at this year’s Palarong Pambansa, conquering the heat is not just a case of simple dipping and frolicking. Rather, it plays along the lines of lanes and competition.

And our very own San Carlos City Special Warriors proved to be insurmountable heat warriors, as they displayed their tenacity in the Swimming division of the Para Games and blow the swimming games out of the water. Four of our commendable athletes proved to be successful and garnered a whopping total of 10 medals in the said division.

A novel in a writer

Take a moment, close your eyes, and recall a story. Now take off your reader hat and put on your analytical writer hat to think about what makes that story so captivating. Every writer has a novel in him. Most of us heard this line already or some variation on it, and understand what it is saying. It is challenging the ancient belief that everyone has a story to tell.

Every writer has a novel in him for numerous reasons. According to Anne Borrowdale, author of an article entitled, ‘Helping Writers Become Authors’, there are five reasons writers write. They write to overcome. We cannot choose what life throws at us, but some of us are spurred by obstacles and opposition. Writers with this motivation love to take on those who reject them and to get immense satisfaction from proving the doubters wrong.

Writers write to achieve a goal. They get their deepest sense of accomplishment from knowing they have fulfilled their goal or completed the task. Along with it, writers write to win. Few of us would turn down praise and prizes, but for some writers, beating the competition is the chief motivation. They are motivated by a need to be the best, to stand out from the crowd, to gather accolades.

Some writers get their chief satisfaction from the process of writing. The means matters more than the end. They spend hours if not years perfecting their prose and are avid users of writing how-to-books and sites, which help them keep improving. These writers write to create.

Finally, writers write to have an impact. Writers with this motivation want above all to leave their mark. They are focused on getting a response from readers or inspiring change. The greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the impact being a writer on their own lives.

We all feel these motivations to some degree according to Borrowdale. Whatever reasons or motivations that drive us to write, we cannot deny the fact that every writer has a story to tell, has a novel in him. Just as a lion is the product of all the zebras it has eaten, a writer is the product of all the books he or she has read, the product of his/her experiences and imaginations and above all, the product of his/her motivations.

On Winning: Price and Prize

In every competition, the aim of each contestant is to win. It is every competitor’s desire to hit the gold and bring home the bacon. It is the wish of everyone who joins a contest to outrank others and be declared as winner.

Schools Press Conferences (division, regional and national levels) are held annually with the objective of honing students’ talents and skills in the field of journalism. Yearly, campus journalists armed with their knowledge and pens meet and compete. Their writing prowess is exhibited through contest events such as News, Editorial, Feature, Science-Feature, Copy Reading and Headline Writing, and Sports writing. Their broadcasting skill is displayed through Radio and TV Broadcasting Competition. Talents in drawing and photography are enhanced through Editorial Cartooning and Photojournalism.

Every campus journalist in a competition has that ardent desire to win. But, what does it take to win and what’s in store in winning?
